MINISTER MACKAY CONGRATULATES MEMBERTOU ON THE OPENING OF THE HAMPTON INN HOTEL

MEMBERTOU (NS) – June 27, 2012 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, Regional Minister for Nova Scotia and Minister of National Defence congratulated the Membertou First Nation and DP Murphy Inc. on the opening of the Hampton Inn Hotel in Membertou. The construction of the hotel was made possible with financial support from the Government of Canada.

“This project is a concrete example of how our Government makes targeted investments that directly benefit Aboriginal communities and the regions they call home,” said Minister MacKay, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie. “This new hotel complements the remarkable growth and development that has occurred in Membertou and benefits the Cape Breton economy.”

Connected to the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre by a pedway, the 128-room Hampton Inn also provides meeting space and many guest-friendly amenities such as a swimming pool with waterslide, hot tub and wireless internet. The hotel is expected to create more than 50 jobs.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation assisted with the construction of this facility through the provision of a $2.28 million interest-bearing loan to the joint venture company that built the hotel and a $930,000 contribution.

Membertou is an urban First Nation community on Cape Breton Island, located a few kilometers from the heart of Sydney, Nova Scotia. It is widely recognized to be one of Canada’s most progressive and entrepreneurial First Nations.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
