MINISTER MACKAY ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR VINCE RYAN MEMORIAL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

GLACE BAY (NS) – April 26, 2012 –  The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia announced today a contribution for the Vince Ryan Memorial Hockey Tournament. Thanks to this investment by the Government of Canada through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC), the largest adult hockey tournament in Canada will continue to attract visitors to Cape Breton Island.

“Our Government’s priority is the economy and jobs and we are committed to working with communities to better position them for economic growth,” said
Minister MacKay. “The Vince Ryan Tournament is recognized as a major sporting event and a contributor to the Cape Breton economy. This investment will support the long term viability of this successful tournament and assist with the attraction of more teams from outside of Cape Breton Island.”

The Vince Ryan Memorial Hockey Tournament originated in 1989 as an adult hockey tournament to honour the memory of a well known local hockey personality and to raise funds in support of local youth. Over the years, it has grown into an event that attracts over 140 teams and 2,000 players, many of whom return every year from communities across Canada and the USA.  Hosted over four days each March, the Tournament provides revenue for local hotels, restaurants and other related service providers during what is traditionally a slow time of year. Proceeds from the Tournament are used to provide scholarships to local students. Over the past 22 years, a total of $600,000 in scholarships has been awarded.

In recognition of the Tournament’s role as an economic generator, ECBC is providing $249,000 over the next three years to defray the costs of hosting the annual Vince Ryan Memorial Hockey Tournament.

”The Vince Ryan Memorial Hockey Tournament celebrates the history, culture and hospitality of Cape Breton Island,” said Tournament President, Richie Warren. “Our success over the years is attributable to the many community-minded volunteers who have worked tirelessly to provide participants with a quality experience.”

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
