MINISTER MACKAY ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS AT NOVA SCOTIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

SYDNEY (NS) – March 27, 2012 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, National Defence Minister and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, announced today a contribution from the Government of Canada for improvements at the two Nova Scotia Community College campuses on Cape Breton Island to upgrade facilities and equipment used by students in a variety of trades and technology programs.

“Creating jobs and growing the economy remain our Government’s top priorities,” said Minister MacKay, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie. “We are pleased to partner with the Nova Scotia Community College to ensure that students have access to the training, skills and opportunities they need to get into the workforce and to support Canada’s prosperity and success.”

At Sydney’s Marconi Campus, the Nova Scotia Community College will complete classroom renovations and acquire mobile electrical, instrumentation and mechanical simulation components. This state-of-the-art equipment will enable the Nova Scotia Community College to train students for employment in a variety of trades and technology programs as well as support customized oil and gas training for international students.

Nova Scotia Community College’s Strait Area Campus will upgrade its existing physical plant by installing an automated monitoring system with combustion controls and computer simulators. This will provide an enhanced training environment for students enrolled in the Power Engineering Technology program, making them more industry ready. Additional equipment for the Heavy Equipment Operator program will also be acquired and the Electrical Technician program will be modernized.

“The funding Nova Scotia Community College received from Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation will have an immediate impact on learning,” says Dave MacLean, Principal of Marconi Campus. “The classroom renovation and installation of new equipment will allow students in several programs to enhance their skills using the very latest technology.”

The total cost of these enhancements at both campuses is $717,832. The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, is investing $504,562.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
