GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS THE HOSTING OF THE 2012 CANADIAN (SENIOR) ELITE BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

SYDNEY (NS) – November 24, 2011 – The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC), is supporting the efforts of the local organizing committee to host the 2012 Canadian (Senior) Elite Boxing Championships.

“Our Government is committed to working with communities to strengthen the local economy and create jobs,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia. “Hosting the 2012 Championships complements our Government’s major events strategy that seeks to stimulate economic activity by attracting major sporting and cultural events to the Island. The economic impact of this national event will be significant.”

The Canadian (Senior) Elite Boxing Championships will take place at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre from January 10-14, 2012, attracting up to 400 off-island boxers, coaches, officials, family members and friends. 2012 is an Olympic year for boxing and the winners from each weight division in the 2012 Championships will go on to tournaments which will form the basis for selecting Canada's Olympic Team.

The event is sanctioned by the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and hosted by Ring 73 Amateur Boxing Society and Membertou. Special guest at the 2012 Championships will be Larry Holmes, world heavyweight boxing champion from 1978-1985.

The total cost of hosting the 2012 Championships is estimated to be $345,000. ECBC is providing assistance in the amount of $75,000.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
