CELTIC COLOURS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL RECEIVES GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORT

SYDNEY (NS) – October 11, 2011 – The Celtic Colours International Festival will continue to stake its claim as a major tourist attraction and celebration of Celtic culture thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC).

“Our Government is committed to working with communities to better position them for economic growth. Celtic Colours is recognized as a world class festival and a major contributor to the Cape Breton Island economy.  Year after year, Celtic music enthusiasts from around the world have an opportunity to discover the creativity and diversity of the Island’s culture.” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for ACOA and La Francophonie.

The Celtic Colours International Festival is an annual event celebrating Celtic heritage and music.  The Festival is scheduled to coincide with the autumn splendour for which Cape Breton Island is famous.  It features an extensive line-up of workshops, a visual art series of exhibitions, and a nightly Festival Club.  The festival strengthens the tourism shoulder season and heightens national and international awareness of the arts and culture sectors of Cape Breton Island.

Since its inception in 1997, Celtic Colours has become a Cape Breton tradition attracting thousands of visitors to the Island each year to celebrate Celtic culture and music. In 2010, audience expenditures alone totalled $6.2 million. The estimated economic impact is approximately $15 million annually.

In recognition of the Festival’s role as a major tourism attraction and economic generator, ECBC is providing the Celtic Colours International Festival Society with $900,000 over the next three years to assist with the operation of the Festival.

”The Celtic Colours International Festival's mandate is to celebrate and sustain our living Celtic culture, said Festival Society Chairperson Robert Sampson. “ECBC’s continued support means we are able to focus on increasing the Festival’s economic impact.”

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
