ST. PETER’S OUTDOOR RECREATION CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENS WITH GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORT

ST.  PETER’S (NS) – September 11, 2011 – Residents of St. Peter’s and area can now benefit from a new outdoor recreation centre thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada. The Centre was officially opened at a ceremony held in the community today.

“Our Government is committed to working with communities to better position them for economic growth and to overcome economic challenges,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and regional Minister for Nova Scotia on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie. “This project serves to enhance community infrastructure by providing residents with a better facility in which to play, relax and forge new friendships.”

The construction of the Recreation Centre was spearheaded by the St. Peter’s and Area Lions Club and the Strait Regional School Board. It involved the re-design of an existing ball field adjacent to the marina to accommodate a new community soccer field, track and field pitch, walking track, outdoor fitness centre and playground.

The total cost of the facility was $589,690. The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation has contributed $199,980.  This investment was made through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a key economic stimulus initiative under the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Funding was also provided by the Province of Nova Scotia, the Municipality of the County of Richmond, the Strait Richmond School Board, the East Richmond Elementary School and the St. Peter’s and Area Lions Club.

“The official opening of the Recreation Centre is an important event for the entire community,” said Kelvin Digout, president of the Lions Club. “This project is the result of a great deal of hard work by many volunteers. The St. Peter’s and Area Lions Club is pleased to be of service to the community by providing additional recreational infrastructure for all to enjoy.”

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
