SYDNEY (NS) – October 8, 2009 – Thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada, the 2010 Subway Final 6 Atlantic University Sport Men's Basketball Championship will be hosted at Centre 200 in Sydney, NS from March 12 – 14, 2010. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.
“Sydney’s hosting of the Basketball Championship will provide an opportunity to witness excellent university-level basketball while stimulating the local economy in what is traditionally a slow time of year,” said Minister MacKay. “Federal initiatives under Canada’s Economic Action Plan are helping to stimulate the local economy, create jobs and support those Canadians who are hardest hit by the global economic downturn.”
The Men's Basketball Championship has been hosted in Halifax for the past 28 years. In recent years, average attendance at this event has exceeded 15,500. In 2010, organizers are positioning the Championship in the context of a “Come Home to Cape Breton” campaign. With so many consumers, fans and expatriates travelling to the Island, it is anticipated that this three-day event in March will prove to be a boon to the hospitality industry.
The total cost of the project is $110,000. The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, is investing $30,000.
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and the Mulgrave area.
