PORT HAWKESBURY (NS) – September 24, 2010 – Thanks to support from the Government of Canada, the Strait Area Waterfront Development Society has completed a major renovation of the Port Hawkesbury Marina. The official opening of the new club house and marina was held today.
“Our Government is committed to working with communities to position them for economic growth,” said Minister Ashfield. “This project will enhance community infrastructure and stimulate economic activity in the Strait of Canso area, making it a more attractive place in which to live, invest and visit.”
The Marina’s former club house and storage shed were demolished and replaced with a new facility housing a multi-purpose room, kitchen, washrooms, showers and a laundry room. Other improvements include the construction of a new storage facility, the replacement of gas tanks and pumps and upgrades to the power supply at the docks.
“The Strait Area Waterfront Development Society's primary objective is to establish the Port Hawkesbury's waterfront area as a focal point for the community,” said Fran Payne, Chairperson of the Society. “This project builds community capacity in the tourism sector. It will help attract visitors to the area and generate economic spinoffs.”
The total cost of the project is $720,000. The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, is investing $590,000.
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and the Mulgrave area.
