MINISTER MACKAY ANNOUNCES INVESTMENTS IN  CAPE BRETON UNIVERSITY AND NOVA SCOTIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE – MARCONI CAMPUS

SYDNEY (NS) – March 23, 2011 - Cape Breton’s post secondary education and training sector received a boost today with a major investment from the Government of Canada. The funding will enhance training opportunities at Cape Breton University (CBU) and the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) – Marconi Campus.

“Our Government is working to create and sustain jobs for Canadians in all regions of the country,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia. “Our investments will help ensure that CBU and the NSCC continue to provide the training and education needed to meet changing industry demands and foster future economic growth in Cape Breton and beyond.”

CBU will acquire dynamic simulation models and equipment to support local and international training of employees in the energy sector. The project includes the expansion and upgrade of simulation software and models, new computer equipment and minor building renovations. This project enhances CBU’s current simulation training facilities to reflect changes in the global oil and gas sector. Access to state-of-the art, oil and gas simulation facilities will enable CBU to obtain contracts to provide international students with advanced skills training in Cape Breton.

The total cost of the project is $250,000 and the Government of Canada is investing $187,500 through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC).

The NSCC – Marconi Campus will purchase equipment and complete campus renovations to enable it to institute a new, two-year fitter/welder program. This program has been designed in consultation with the metal fabricator trade and will be tailored to meet the changing needs of the sector by broadening the scope and flexibility of the training.

The total cost of the project is $434,911 and the Government of Canada is investing $274,864 through ECBC.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
